Why This Nurse Says We Can Defeat Cancer Now

Jenny Hrbacek says our country must go to war. But this conflict doesn’t involve air-to-ground missiles or nuclear bombs. Instead, Hrbacek, a registered nurse, author, speaker and breast cancer survivor, has made it her life’s work to fight cancer.

“We need to say ‘enough,'” Hrbacek says on the “Hope Through Cancer” series on Charisma News. “We are not going to let this disease steal our joy and take our mothers and fathers and grandfathers and grandmothers and children away from us. Because these people have a purpose. It was written in heaven before they were ever conceived … And they’re being taken out by a disease that we have our head in the sand about.”

The problem, Hrbacek says, is our country’s standard of care. “When you get cancer, we give you a drug. So we’re spending millions of dollars on drug therapies. And the thing is, drugs are not the cure for cancer. … surgery and chemotherapy and radiation are not the cure for cancer.”

What we need to do instead, she says, involves two primary areas: prevention and detection. Her book, Cancer Free: Are You Sure?(Charisma House, 2017) and website, cancerfreeexperts.com, offer powerful help with both. Hrbacek’s own cancer diagnosis fueled her interest in early detection.

“When I asked the doctor how long I’d had this cancer, he said, ‘Seven to 10 years.’ … If you’re going to have cancer, you want to find out when it’s like at stage 0, or before it will even show up on a scan,” Hrbacek says. “I couldn’t believe how we could put men on the moon, and we have the skinny TVs that are now, what, an inch thick? But we can’t tell someone they have cancer for that many years.”

As she recovered from her own surgery and treatment, Hrbacek used her research skills to acquire the wealth of information she now shares with others, including the fact that only 5% of cancers are genetic-related, which means 90%-plus are preventable. “We have the wrong approach; we’ve got this thing upside down,” Hrbacek says. “And it’s because our health care system is reactive. It’s really a ‘sick care’ system: We wait for you to get that diagnosis before we jump in and start [care].”
