“But it will happen, if you will not listen to the voice of the Lord your God, by being careful to do all His commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you … The Lord will send cursing, vexation, and rebuke on you in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly because of the wickedness of your doings, by which you have forsaken Me” (Deut. 28:15, 20).
On this day, June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court has issued a decision saying that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right. Be warned, America. A constitutional right is not the same thing as a divine right.
What should be our response to the Supreme Court ruling as followers of Jesus? The most appropriate way to respond that immediately comes to my mind is to pray. But how do we pray now that the decision has been rendered? How do we pray for a nation that has officially, legally decided that God’s Word and God’s principles and God’s institutions and even God Himself are irrelevant?
As I asked the Lord how I should pray in the face of such blatant, official rejection of Him, this is what He seemed to whisper to me:
Pray for this one decision to do what even 9/11 was unable to do: Wake up God’s people! America is imploding morally and spiritually.
Could the Supreme Court decision be the trigger for another Great Spiritual Awakening? Yes, I believe it could … If we, God’s people, will humble ourselves and pray, seek God’s face, rend our hearts in deep repentance of sin, return to Him and plead for His mercy, He may indeed answer our prayer by giving us a fresh outpouring of His Spirit.
Pray for revival! Other than the return of Jesus Christ, it’s America’s only hope.
“Who knows? He might turn aside and relent, and He might leave behind a blessing” (Joel 2:14).
