3 Ways to Respond When Opportunity Knocks

someone knocking on door

Is opportunity knocking at your door? Nothing can compare with the wisdom of God as you decide which opportunity is the right one to invest your time, energy or resources in.

Here are three questions to help you determine how to proceed when opportunity comes knocking…

Question #1: Should something be done? If you’re able to answer “yes” to this question, you’re ready to move on to Question #2.

For example, is there a person or situation weighing on your heart? An elderly neighbor … a group of youth stirring up trouble in your city … a hurting nation that’s come before you in prayer?

Before you take on every “project” that comes before you, begin by asking, “Should something be done?”

Question #2: Can it be done? You may not know for sure, but don’t let the answer to Question #2 formulate your answer to Question #1. If something should be done, then we should at least try—not because we know it can be done, but because it should be. This is where faith kicks in.

When God was directing me to move the revival to Kansas City, a reporter asked me, “Do you think you’re going to succeed?” In other words, he was asking “Can it be done?”

My response was based on the fact that it should be done. “I’m not going to succeed,” I told the reporter, “I’m going to obey.”

Question #3: Is there anyone else more willing or able to do it? You’ve got to have both a willing vessel and a capable one. If no one else is stepping up, then consider what you can do to step into this opportunity.

For example, I have a heart to see revival in Israel and among the Jewish people. I’ve looked for a long time to see if there’s anyone else both willing and able, but as my friend Sid Roth has commented, “I don’t know anyone else but you, Steve.”

My church is behind me in this vision. When God spoke to Abraham of the Jewish people, he said, “I will bless those who bless you … .” Even if we don’t succeed, we will be blessed if we try. It’s a wise opportunity to invest in.

When opportunities come your way, let wisdom speak. Be ready to act as God leads. “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act” (Prov. 3:27).
