From media to politics, from moral values to the foundation of marriage and family, there has been a breakdown of standards. There is a fast decline of reverence and holiness. This world is refusing to acknowledge what the Word of God declares is our foundation for morality and righteousness.
Landmarks of Protection
In Prov. 22:28, the Bible says, “Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set.” It was Israel’s custom to place stakes in the ground that marked out the borders of their land, which was their God-given inheritance. These landmarks were set in the ground and were placed as signs to all who saw them that this land belonged to its owner by right! It was also a declaration to Israel’s enemies that this was a boundary which they were not to cross over. This was the borderline of their inheritance, and it was an immovable landmark that was not to be breached or taken away. Israel’s enemies knew that if they crossed the borderline, it meant war.
The Word of God has set landmarks of truth that are never to be removed or broken down. God has not given us a list of rules; on the contrary, these landmarks of truth have been established to protect us! They give humanity a clear understanding of righteousness and of our inheritance in Jesus Christ. In Psalm 119:89, the Bible says, “Lord, your word lasts forever. It stands firm in the heavens.” God’s Word establishes a hedge of protection for His people that the enemy cannot penetrate. This is the inheritance of our salvation!
When the devil asked God about Job, he said, “Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land” (Job 1:10). This hedge of protection was not just something physical; it was a spiritual hedge of protection from outside destruction.
God’s Ultimate Boundary: The Cross
The cross of Calvary was a boundary stake that was driven into the ground. What the devil did not understand was that the Blood of Jesus that flowed from His side was the eternal landmark of our salvation that would never be taken away. It has created a line of separation that has delivered us from the power of sin, death and hell and given us the inheritance of eternal life! Is. 54:17 says, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment, You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” says the Lord.
As the people of God, it is critical for us not to allow the landmarks of our salvation and the truths of God’s Word to be removed from our lives. Heb. 2:3 declares, “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him.”
This is not a time to compromise the Word of God and fall to the demands of today’s generation. This is the time to shine with the light of truth and God’s righteousness, that a generation may see that Jesus Christ is the only way, the truth and the life!
