Without question, we are born with desires. Many of these emerge even as children. I used to shut myself in my room with my mother’s typewriter and craft handmade “books” as a six-year-old. Some kids love engineering masterpieces out of Legos. Other kids are naturally drawn to people and making friends. These God-given desires are like clues, bringing pieces together of who we are and what we are called to.
Other desires are not so great. When Scott in pre-K hits you and your desire is to bite him, it’s not such a great thing. Part of maturing—both literally and spiritually—is learning to discern our desires. Which are God-given and made to glorify the kingdom of God and which are the flesh? The problem is many of us, in the process of maturing, parent our desires out completely. Imagine your daughter coming to you and telling you that she had decided since she didn’t want to give in to any bad desires on accident, she would never do anything she enjoyed ever again. How heartbreaking! Yet we do this to ourselves all the time. We cast judgment on our desires by calling them a waste of time or unimportant and bury our talents.
What are at least three desires you have? What is at the core of these desires? How does God want to use these for His glory? Unpack these with me on the full episode of “Hear God Everyday with Sara Whitten” and give yourself permission to have those God-given desires. {eoa}
