God’s Word is timeless, eternal and cannot return void. Marilyn Hickey, in one of her classic teachings, explains why your most important asset is your attitude.
Attitude is more important than facts. Your attitude is more important than your past, your education, your money, your circumstances, your failures, your successes and it’s more important that what people say or think about you. Your attitude is the greatest asset you have or it’s the factor that can put you under.
Your attitude will determine your altitude, it can keep you in a low place when God wants you to be in a high place. Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it, so your attitude is 90% of your success or failure.
What is attitude? Attitude is how you handle your feelings. Marilyn believes your attitude is the prophet of your future. Your attitude about whether you’re going to win or lose will determine your future. Proverbs 23 says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” So the way your attitude is, is the way you’re going to be.
God cannot heal a bad attitude. Proverbs 29:1 says, “he who is often rebuked, and hardens his heart, will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” You’re not to faint when you’re rebuked by the Lord. Wise people accept a rebuke because they know it can make them better. But if your attitude is rotten, there’s no remedy for that. You are the one who has to change the attitude.

In 1 Samuel 18, Saul had a bad attitude. He was jealous of David and rebellious toward God. When Samuel came and corrected him, Saul made excuses instead of repenting. When we repent, there’s an opportunity to change your attitude. Saul got into witchcraft. The Bible tells us that stubbornness is like the sin of witchcraft. Stubbornness is a wrong attitude. Saul didn’t change and he ended up being destroyed. David, on the other hand, could have had a bad attitude because Saul was trying to persecute him. But David kept a right attitude and he ended up a king.
In 1 Kings 10:8, the queen of Sheba says to Solomon, “Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom!” What she noticed first was Solomon’s attitude. It wasn’t just his servants and staff that was happy, Solomon was happy, too. Attitudes are contagious. Solomon had a happy attitude because he had godly wisdom.
Do you need godly wisdom? Go to your Bible! When you read the Bible, you get happy and discouragement fades. The Bible is where you go to get an attitude adjustment because that’s where the wisdom of God resides. When you live in godly wisdom, you live in happiness.
Marilyn says, the day you truly grow up, is the day you take full responsibility for your attitude. Don’t let your attitude be determined by your circumstances, let your attitude be determined by God’s Word.
