How to Discern the Voice of God

Christianity is distinct from other religions because although Jesus died, He is alive and desires to guide our lives.

The contrasting examples of David and Saul highlight truths about hearing God’s voice (1 Chron. 10:13, 1 Sam. 30:6).

How to Discern the Voice of God

– If you are more desperate for a word from God than you are devoted to God, you will lose discernment and fall into deception. Saul’s first problem was his desperation for a word at the expense of his devotion to God (1 Sam. 28).

God wants to communicate with you in your community.

– A relationship with the Holy Spirit is more important than a revelation from the Holy Spirit.

David’s response to trouble was going to the Lord for strength first, then for direction. However, facing similar situations, Saul only asked what he should do and there was no response.

Go to God to be filled with Him before you go to be led by Him.

– When you are filled with God’s Word, you will become familiar with His voice.

Part of Saul’s unfaithfulness was that he did not dwell in God’s Word.

John 10:27 (MEV) states, “My sheep hear My voice.”

First, hear Him in the Bible, then you’ll distinguish His voice throughout the day.

– If you can’t hear God today, it’s because you did not heed to His voice yesterday.

When God spoke to Saul, he did not obey.

If God speaks and you don’t obey, next time you will hear Him more quietly. It’s as if you are lowering the volume with disobedience but you unmute it with repentance.

Final Thoughts

If you are in a season of silence, don’t be discouraged. Instead, stay close to God, remember His promises and what He has done in your life because God will speak again. {eoa}
