Let’s cut to the chase. We all want to know how to get what we want from God.
We say, “Let’s pray about it” or “I’ll go to God on this one” or “Thy will be done,” but secretly, we are all wondering if there is a set of magic words or actions to unlock the blessings of heaven and get what we want from God. Even James said, “Yet you do not have, because you do not ask” (see James 4:2-3). So we ask … then we wait.
It feels a lot like trying to remember your Apple ID. My father-in-law forgot his Apple ID one time and couldn’t unlock his phone. We told him to click on “forget my password,” and they’ll email you a new one. He said, “Well, that’s a problem. I don’t know my email password either.” This made for a fun Christmas. We tried everything known to man and eventually had to get a new phone and Apple ID altogether.
My guess is you’ve been there with God. I know I have. How come my prayers don’t get past the ceiling? How come when I pray for healing from cancer, I get silence? Yet when someone else brags about praying, they get a front-row parking space?
I reached out to Jan Johnson, author of multiple books on prayer, and she gave great insight on how to turn prayer into a conversation and begin to hear from God. You can listen to it here.
I began to learn that prayer isn’t so much about me getting what I want, but Him getting all I am. And then my wants begin to change. As a result, my prayers for 2021 are looking a lot different than they were a few years ago. I spent some time sharing what I’m going to pray in 2021, claiming that God will not only hear … but also answer. I hope you’ll join me!
