Did you know that there are 13 famines found in the Bible? The modern translation of a famine is economic crisis. While she was studying those famines, God told Marilyn Hickey that there were 13 miracles for each of those 13 economic crises.

Marilyn believes there are keys to a miracle in every economic crisis:

1. Stand in covenant. You have to be born again to be in covenant.

2. Sow. Sow even during famine time. If you want miracles during an economic crisis, you have to do the things God says. Unless you sow seed, you won’t see harvest.

3. Revelation. You need to ask God for a revelation for your own economic condition. God has a revelation and He has a secret He can reveal to you about what to do, how to make it work, and how you’re to act in the situation.

The first famine found in the Bible is in Genesis 12. Abraham was called to go to the promised land and when he gets there, there was a famine. Abraham went to Egypt and made some bad choices, lying about his wife. Then Abraham returned to the promised land where God blessed him.

What was the key to Abraham’s blessings? Covenant! When you are born again, you get into covenant with God and He will bless you, encourage you and multiply you. Galatians 3:29 says if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Note that the Bible doesn’t say “maybe” God will bless us. Hebrews 6:14 says, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.” God doesn’t bless you because of how cool you are, He blesses you because you are in covenant. Abraham was blessed because he was in covenant, and he stood in his covenant right.

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all experienced famines. The second key to a miracle is found in Genesis 26 in the story of Isaac. During a famine, God told Isaac to live among the Philistines, a bad people who were the enemies to Abraham’s seed. So Isaac had to live in bad circumstances. Isaac started to re-dig some of his father’s wells, which the Philistines had filled.

Isaac dug out the wells, but the Philistines came and filled them again. So instead of being confrontational, Isaac moved on and got down to business. The Bible tells us Isaac sowed and reaped a hundredfold in the time of famine. One of the big keys in famine time (economic crisis) is to sow. So stand on the covenant and you sow your seed.

The third key, revelation, is found in Genesis 42 and the story of Jacob when there was a terrible famine. He had 12 sons, one was missing—and famine hit. Jacob’s sons heard there was food in Egypt. You know the story of Joseph, the governor of Egypt. Joseph had a revelation that there would be seven years of plenty and seven years of famine. If Joseph had not had that revelation, he would not have saved Egypt, he wouldn’t have saved his family, and if he had not saved his family, we wouldn’t have had a Messiah.

In the book of Ruth there is a story of another famine. Elimelech and Naomi left Bethlehem and moved to Moab, which was out of the will of God. Their sons married Moabite women, and all three men died. Naomi ended up poor, without a husband or sons to take care of her, and with two daughters-in-law. Naomi got a revelation that she should return to Bethlehem, and Ruth went with her. Then Naomi got a revelation of how Ruth could find a husband (Ruth 3:3). As a result of that revelation, Boaz married Ruth, and their genealogy produced Jesus.

God will show you things to do, but it takes time to wait on God and to listen to the Spirit of God.

The Bible shows us in 2 Samuel 21 that there was a famine during David’s reign; it hadn’t rained in three years. The Gibeonites, who were godly converts to Judaism, said Saul mistreated them and shed a lot of blood. They wanted blood for blood, desiring that the sons of Saul be killed during the first days of the harvest, and they were.

But it still didn’t rain. David was upset because he believed he did the right thing. Rizpah, one of Saul’s concubines who had two sons killed, said they should be buried in a king’s tomb. She built fires, drove away animals and prayed that God wouldn’t let it rain until they were given a decent burial. When David heard about that, he allowed them to be buried in the king’s tomb—and it rained. For that to happen, David had to have a revelation.

It doesn’t matter what you’re going through; God has a miracle for you. If you want a miracle, stand in covenant as a born-again believer, sow seed, ask God for revelation and trust that He will take care of you.
