In this episode of Rooted by the Stream on the Charisma Podcast Network, Dr. R.T. Kendall joins host Dr. Pam Morrison to discuss how Kendall’s new book, Word and Spirit, proclaims the next great move of God, and to ask faith communities, “Are you ready?”
There are two types of faith communities that, Kendall says, are in the middle of a silent divorce. He calls them “Word churches” and “Spirit churches.”
Morrison reflects on her experiences with both traditional liturgical and charismatic Pentecostal church services, realizing the truth in what Dr. Kendall says: “There’s something else still that I’m seeking that is beyond what I had as a child and a young person and then what I came into later in life, which is the Spirit, and that is the bringing together of those two things,” she says.
Far from abolishing the extremes of either groups of faith, Kendall says, “We need to honor and value prophetic words, but test them by Scripture.” A truly healthy church—one that Kendall anticipates will be formed in this next great move of the Lord—will marry both the biblically sound basis of a Word church and the revelatory nature of a Spirit church. At the foundation of this seemingly utopian faith community are two principles Kendall says everyone must adhere. “Every person needs a good Bible reading plan [and] … pray at least 30 minutes a day.”
Morrison adds, “It isn’t a matter of something brand-new. It is a matter of doing the things that always have brought us close to God, which is to seek intimacy with Him, through His Word, through prayer, through worship, through time spent with Him.”
