When many people discover the name of the church Tim Lucas pastors in New Jersey, they think the worst. Liquid Church isn’t exactly a name you hear frequently in the kingdom.
But Lucas, who says the church began in 2007 “on accident” in the basement of a 150-year-old church, says the name is extremely appropriate. His “flock” is dedicated to reaching the spiritually dry—those who have given up on church but haven’t given up on God—with the living water of Jesus.
Liquid Church has grown exponentially since, and was named one of the 100 Fastest-Growing Churches by Outreach Magazine in 2019.
“I think when people hear the name Liquid, they assume, well, that’s a strange name,” Lucas told Dr. Steve Greene on a recent episode of Greenelines on the Charisma Podcast Network. “They may think, well, it’s either a cult or a drinking fraternity.
“But we named it Liquid for a simple reason. Jesus calls Himself living water. Certainly, there are a lot of spiritually thirsty people, particularly the next generation of Millennials and Gen Z. They are desperately thirsty for a living, vibrant relationship with Christ.”
What is Liquid Church’s secret to reaching these people? Lucas says it has harnessed the power of six ministry currents—special needs, creative communication, ministry mergers, compassionate cause, radical generosity and leadership development—to connect with those who are tired of dead religion and want to dive deeper into a relationship with Jesus.
