Is the coming Great American Eclipse a prophetic warning from God?
As the nation prepares for the celestial event, many are excited about seeing it. But what if this eclipse is more than just a fun and exciting event? What if it is an actual warning from God?
In one of her most recent messages, Amanda Grace discussed the significance of the coming eclipse in relation to historical eclipses, including the eclipse that happened in Nineveh before Jonah came with a message of repentance.
“Jonah’s ministry would have been in the first half of the eighth century BC from about 793 to 750 BC. During this time the Assyrian eponym canon records an eclipse of the sun…modern astronomical calculations date this eclipse to June 15, 763 BC,” Grace says. “It was a total eclipse as it passed near Nineveh.”
Because the people of Nineveh would have just experienced this natural phenomenon, hearing a message like Jonah’s of a dire need to repent or else their city would be destroyed would be a very compelling argument to get right with God.
“That is why they repented so fast and they put on sackcloth and them humbled themselves because they took that eclipse as a sign they were going to be destroyed,” Grace says.
Now in 2024, we are seeing this same call for repentance as the pathway for the April 8 eclipse includes many towns names Nineveh.
It has also been debated for quite awhile whether or not an eclipse happened during the time of Christ’s crucifixion because of the darkness that fell over the land. While a solar eclipse seems less probable to some, a lunar eclipse is said to have occurred that evening.

The day of Jesus’ crucifixion was believed to be April 3, 33 AD. As The Salt Lake Tribune notes, and a lunar eclipse did happen that night, however, it may not have been visible from Jerusalem. Still, there is greater significance to this lunar eclipse, as Grace points out that a blood moon occurred on the nights when both Jesus and Herod died.
The blood moon from the night of Jesus’ death, as she explains, finished around 7:11 p.m., which signifies another important timeline in the Old Testament.
Genesis 7:11 recounts the days of Noah when he and his family were protected in the ark while the floods raged about the earth. Judgment had come, and those who were faithful and obedient to God were the ones spared.
And now we too are about to experience both a blood moon and a solar eclipse during a time when our society has decided to call evil good and good evil. Is this all coincidence, or is God trying to send us a clear and straight-forward message?
With Purim, Passover and Holy week all right around the corner, perhaps God is using the natural to speak supernaturally to us. Judgment is coming and repentance is not an option.
