Tim Allen, the renowned actor and comedian, is making headlines once again as ABC orders a pilot for his latest sitcom, Shifting Gears. The show will mark Allen’s third collaboration with ABC, following the long-running hit Home Improvement and the beloved Last Man Standing.
In Shifting Gears, Allen stars as Matt, a hardheaded widower who owns a shop specializing in restoring classic cars. The multi-camera sitcom, written and executive produced by Mike and Julie Scully, promises to bring Allen’s signature humor and charm to a new generation of viewers.

While the show’s premise centers on classic car restoration, it’s likely that Shifting Gears will also explore themes of family, friendship and personal growth, with the focus being on Allen restoring his relationship with his estranged daughter, much like Allen’s previous shows. The actor’s ability to seamlessly blend humor and heart has made him a fan favorite, and there’s little doubt that Shifting Gears will continue this tradition.
ABC’s decision to order a pilot for Shifting Gears should come as no surprise, given the network’s successful history with Allen. The actor’s previous shows have been ratings hits, with Home Improvement running for eight seasons and Last Man Standing for nine. Both series showcased Allen’s comedic talents and his ability to connect with audiences on a personal level.
However, Disney made a questionable decision in the past when they attempted to recast Allen’s voice for Toy Story icon Buzz Lightyear with the voice of left-wing actor Chris Evans.
Allen is one of the few remaining conservative voices still getting work in Hollywood, and many attributed this change in voice actor as one of the many reasons the film Lightyear bombed at the box office.
The Scullys, who will serve as executive producers alongside Allen, are no strangers to the world of television. Mike Scully is best known for his work on The Simpsons, while Julie Thacker Scully has written for a variety of popular shows.
With the show still in development, it is still a nice change of pace to see a family oriented, and appropriate, show greenlit among the surge of spiritually harmful media being pumped out by studios these days.
