When we intercede, our mindset really matters. We need to approach our prayers with confidence, knowing our position of authority as loved children of God. God has given us authority, and when we pray and declare the word of God, those we pray for will receive from the throne of God.

Job 22:27–30 says: “You will make your prayer to Him, He will hear you, and you will pay your vows. You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; so light will shine on your ways.…He will even deliver one who is not innocent; yes, he will be delivered by the purity of your hands” (NKJV).

In the Amplified Bible, verse 28 says, “You will also decree and decide a thing….” We have a covenant with God, are washed in the blood of Christ, are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus—and we have the authority to decree and decide. We do this through intercession. This is what this passage in Job is speaking about—interceding on behalf of others, even those who are still living in sin and are apart from God. They don’t have a covenant with God, but we can bring breakthrough on their behalf through our prayers.

When Abraham stood before the Lord on behalf of Sodom and Gomorrah, he stood on his covenant with God, and God agreed to hold back judgment for Abraham’s sake if even ten righteous people existed there (see Gen. 18:16–33). Now, we have a better covenant than Abraham based on better promises.

In verse 30 of the Amplified, it says, “He will even rescue the one [for whom you intercede] who is not innocent; and he will be rescued through the cleanness of your hands.” In intercession, in the spirit we lay one hand on a person and one hand on God. Then we decide and decree the word of God; we speak the word of God over that person and that person will be delivered. This happens not through the person’s merit, but because of the cleanness of our hands.

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the word of God divides between soul and spirit. So, when we pray the word over an unsaved person, that word goes into the realm of the spirit and does a work in that person’s heart. The word of God is an incorruptible seed—quick and powerful and sharper than a two-edged sword. It is “like a fire…and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces” (Jer. 23:29 NKJV). It tills the hardened ground of people’s hearts and prepares them to receive the fullness of Christ.

In Matthew 8:8, the centurion told Jesus that because He was a man of authority, he knew Jesus could simply speak a word, and his servant would be healed. Now we have that same authority. When we pray and decree, our words carry the authority of our Father to break strongholds and bring deliverance.
