Bebo Norman | BEC Recordings
Singer-songwriter Bebo Norman aimed for simplicity while working on his seventh studio project, Ocean, which releases today. As a result, he was left with music so moving, lyrics so rich and messages so deep that it makes the album an absolute must-buy this season.
Not unlike his previous recordings, Norman’s personal approach to Ocean is much like looking into the windows of not only his soul, but also the souls of every believer who may struggle to remember who they are in Christ, especially when it can be so easy to define our lives by relationships and occupations.
“The song ‘Ocean’ on this record is a prayer, and the prayer says, ‘You are an ocean I can get lost in.’ I just want to get lost in the identity I have in Christ,” Norman says.
The album’s first single, “Here Goes,” deals with the similar theme of learning to have faith and put trust in God, even when this seems impossible. “When we fear our failure, God is asking us to move into that fear and through that fear … believing that He is good,” he says.
Norman co-wrote the song with friend and fellow artist Brandon Heath. Their lyrics remind us to jump in and live, because we “never got anywhere by running away … never loved anyone by playing it safe.” Norman also collaborated with Jason Ingram and Laura Story for Ocean.
Norman and his guitarist, Gabe Scott, recently talked with editorial intern Sarah Stegall for The Buzz about Ocean, working together, and how their careers in music began.
