Making Real Men Outdoors

Making Real Men Outdoors

Making Real Men OutdoorsRemember, fear is a controllable emotion. That’s the last thing Ted Thompson, co-founder of Real Men Outdoors mentoring camps, says to a group of boys before sending them into a dense forest with only the moon’s light providing visibility for the next few hours. No, this isn’t punishment for the teens; it’s one of the many character-building situations they’ll face as part of the Orlando, Fla.-based ministry’s program to instill godly values in developing young men.

Run by an all-volunteer staff, Real Men Outdoors is a organization that uses the “wilderness experience” to teach fundamental qualities such as responsibility and accountability, which Thompson believes are missing in many of today’s youth. Citing results from a census poll taken a few years ago, Thompson says he and his co-founder Lawrence Williams were dismayed to find that 40 percent of all young men under the age of 19 in America live in homes without responsible men present.

Breaking Racism’s Curse

In the ’70s Richard Harris made history by becoming the
youngest Ku Klux Klan Grand Dragon state leader in history. Now a
pastor, professor and author, Harris decries his former life and
confronts the issue of racism head-on.

Harris says his change of heart happened at age 20, after
four years in the Klan. His superiors assigned him to a chaplain
position and required him to study the Bible.

Embezzler Finds True Path to Riches

Before Kevin Cross turned 22 he’d
received a bachelor’s degree in accounting, embezzled $300,000 from the
government, been blackmailed by the mob and convicted of a felony. But
Cross says the excitement of his cinematic life story doesn’t compare to
the exhilarating life he now leads in Christ. He travels the country
teaching that true riches can be found only through biblical financial
stewardship.

Cross says he
spent most of his early years chasing riches. “My god was pleasure, and
it was so satisfying. The problem is, it wears off like a drug,” says
Cross, who is president of Cross Stewardship Ministries in Roswell, Ga.

Using the Unusual

Amena Brown doesn’t always close her eyes and sway to music while in praise and worship at church. Sometimes she stands in front of the congregation and performs worshipful, hard-hitting “spoken-word poetry” to music. Brown, who also ministers her thought-provoking poetry to young adults at Fusion and Passion conferences across the country, says that everyone …

Youth Evangelist Winkie Pratney Recovering After Stroke

New Zealand-based youth evangelist Winkie Pratney is slowly
recovering from a stroke that caused a brain aneurysm the day after Christmas.

“Each day we’ve noticed marked improvement, and his
recall seems to be deepening,” wrote Pratney’s son, William Pratney, in a
Dec. 28 blog posting at winkiepratney.com. “He began writing in a
notepad we got him, attempting to remember things like people’s names, books he
has written, sermon topics he has spoken on.”

Ugandan Pastors Call for Apology From Rick Warren

Ugandan church leaders are calling on California pastor Rick
Warren to “biblically issue an apology for having wronged us.”

In a recent letter, the group of 20 denominational leaders
said the Purpose Driven Life author caused “distress” in their
nation after he requested they speak out against the Anti-Homosexuality Bill
2009 currently awaiting approval in the Ugandan Parliament.

Study Finds Young People Less Likely to Read the Bible

A recent Barna Group found that many young adults are skeptical about the Bible.

In a study exploring how attitudes toward the Bible are changing from generation to generation, the California-based research organization found that only 67 percent of adults ages 18 to 25 viewed the Bible as a sacred text. More than 80 percent of 26- to 41-year-olds and 91 percent of those older than 42 held that view.

TBN Theme Park Targeted for Gay Day

Members of the gay and lesbian community plan to visit the Holy Land Experience in Orlando, Fla., Tuesday with hopes of bringing “a message of equality.”

The Bible-based theme park owned by the Trinity Broadcast Network (TBN) is legally required to drop its $35 admission fee one day a year in order to receive certain property tax breaks. This year the park decided to host its free day just two days before the kick-off of Orlando’s Come Out With Pride week.
