Anchor Yourself to These 3 Essential Core Values

We all face uncertain times. The book of Hebrews uses pictorial language describing this as an anchor. “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and reliable and one which enters within the veil” (Heb. 6:19).

Now, the imagery of an anchor obviously creates a picture of a boat that is going through winds and waves of uncertain circumstances.

The sail, of course, is used to catch the wind to help drive us along in our course of direction.

But the anchor is dropped through the tossing of the waves of uncertainty all the way down to the solid rock below. That’s what an anchor does.

In this imagery, it is an anchor of His presence. It’s an anchor for your soul.

As we navigate the presence of a new revival climate, there often comes on the heels of it an increase of spiritual warfare.

These are perilous times and many of you have been navigating through a landmine of complex situations. These are uncertain times in economics, relationships, churches, politics, wars, displacement and all kinds of issues.

But God’s Word promises that you have an anchor that can be dropped.

I want to exhort you—you must drop your anchor, or you will be tossed about by every wind of doctrine, testing and demonic activity.

Finding Your Anchor: 3 Core Values

One of the most important ways to drop your anchor is to know your core values. This is something I work hard at.

You might ask, what’s a core value?

It’s something that you have internally decided and committed to follow, before the enemy comes knocking, so that when temptation or difficultly comes you’re not tempted or swayed because you’ve already made up your mind about how you will respond.

In my book, “Tell Your Heart to Sing Again,” I share the following:

“In order to learn to hope again, I had to go back to my ABCs, to my foundations. What did it matter that I was a professional minister who had traveled the globe and ministered in over 50 nations, and had written over 30 books? I had to start back at the beginning.

“I figured out three core values: (1) God is good, all the time; (2) ‘All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose’ (Rom. 8:28, NKJV); and (3) Something good is just about to happen.

“Number one, ‘God is good, all the time,’ is not just a catch- phrase. I read the Bible from front to back all over again, and it convinced me that God just does not make mistakes. He loves me. He loves everybody. He knows what He is doing. We just have to believe that even when we are feeling as if the very life has been snuffed out of us.

“‘All things work together for good …’ People who feel they must say something helpful in the face of tragedy too often use that scriptural advice glibly. But the fact that it has been overused does not invalidate it. Not that everything that happens is good, but if you continue to walk with Him, He will take your broken pieces and mend them supernaturally—and that is an absolute miracle. With Him, hope is on the way.

“‘Something good is just about to happen’ That one seems to follow logically from the other two. How in the world can so much tragedy work out for the good? I do not know, but God does. Who can bring light to this dark night of the soul? He can.”

We must believe that even when we don’t feel like it, which for me arises when I go through so much pain and difficulty with my sciatic nerve pain—and I have to drop the anchor of my soul.

God brings light to any dark situation.

I want to encourage you to find your core values and drop your anchor to the solid rock below. Then hold on by God’s grace and know that He will see you through!

An Anchoring Prayer of Hope

Father, by the grace You supply, I’m going to drop my anchor through the sea of uncertain circumstances to the solid rock below. I present myself to You to be cleansed in the blood of Jesus from the weight of guilt and shame. I declare that I live and breathe and in You I have my very being. In Jesus’ name, I’m going to shake off weariness and fatigue, and I’m going to drop my anchor of hope. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
