Finding Hope Amid Grief this Holiday Season with Nancy Hicks

For many of us, the holiday season will be especially hard, as we have experienced so much loss and grief. Nancy Hicks gives bruised hearts the precious gift of empathy and hope.

This is the first holiday season for Nancy Hicks, former QVC spokesperson, author, speaker, without her oldest son, David, who passed away in May after a courageous battle with colon cancer. For the past several years, Nancy has spent her time teaching around the world, inspiring people to live fully alive. Now she’s inviting them to live fully alive in the midst of great pain, as she shares openly and vulnerably about her own journey through grief and death.

“Will I run away from the God I have loved my whole life? I just can’t fathom a world in which I don’t love and worship the living God, that of the Bible. Can I be angry? Yes—and I am. Can I be disillusioned? Absolutely—and I am. Can I be desperately hurt? You better believe it—and I am. But can I ultimately turn my back and say, ‘Never again will I bow the knee’? Absolutely not. I cannot…I will not.”

I asked her what she has come to know about God that did she did not know before the death of her son, David. She shared, “It’s not a matter necessarily of I didn’t know this about God. It’s more of a laser focus. I’m all about the kingdom. I’m all about keeping my eye on Christ and the kingdom. I’m all about helping people come to life. I felt this sense of urgency even before David was sick. Whether we live 28 or 98 years, it’s all just a breath. We are meant to live and embrace life.”

If you are experiencing loss this holiday season, Nancy reminds us to remember that “Family is not Christmas. Jesus is Christmas. Let’s keep first things first. We can bring in light and mark the holiday season as we grieve. The extent to which you enter into your pain with Christ is the extent that genuine life is released in you. They are equal in measure. Incarnation is what we get—God entered into the human condition, the dust of the earth. The extent that we too enter into desperate pain with God during this holiday season, that is us being acquainted with the living God and trusting Him with the results. In God’s time, genuine life will be birthed in us. We don’t have to manufacture it—we do our part. God has invited me to this. I go with God, I trust the living God and He will birth life in me in due time. That is the hope of this season.”
