Dr. Bill Winston has a multifaceted, international ministry. He moved from a career as an Air Force fighter pilot to working in marketing management for IBM until he resigned to pursue full-time ministry.
While he was attending seminary, his wife, Veronica, needed a job. What happened taught the couple a lesson about our worth in Christ and how we can walk in all the favor He offers that the pastor and author continues to share today.
“At that time, the whole area was kind of economically down,” Winston tells Dr. Steve Greene on a recent episode of the Greenelines podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network. She went to various employment firms, and they all told her the same thing: “I’m sorry, Mrs. Winston, but there’s nothing happening. People are getting laid off by the hundreds.”
But his wife didn’t accept that, Winston says. Instead, she went to the Word of God.
“She got several Scriptures and wrote them out,” Winston says. “And she put them on the refrigerator and on the cabinets in the bedroom, in the bathroom … and started getting the Scriptures inside of her.”
When a seminary friend of his visited, he asked if she had her job yet.
“I sure do,” she told him.
“Where is it?”
“I don’t know where it is. But I have it.”
Winston explains that she was exercising faith, using the principle of Mark 11:24, “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you will receive them, and you will have them.”
But she exercised her faith in another way too, Winston says. He told his wife what God had revealed to him: “You can have whatever job you want.”
She wrote down just what she wanted on an index card that she still has today, he says. “‘I want a job in computers because that’s the future … I want it 10 minutes from the house. I want this kind of salary. I want to have a car with it’ … she put it all down. We agreed together.”
Soon, Winston came home to find his wife cooking some delicious-smelling soup that she told him wasn’t theirs. “What do you mean?” he asked.
“Well, our friend down the street have fallen on some hard times. They need some help, and I’m fixing dinner for them.”
“What she was sowing was a sacrifice seed,” Winston says. “We had very little money at that time, going to school. She wasn’t working. But she sowed some seed as a food gift.”
And the Lord responded, he says. “Once she did that, about three days later, an employment agent called her … ‘I see here that you came by our office several months ago. And I think I have something for you. I’m brand-new at this company. And I was cleaning out the desk drawer and ran across your name.'”
The next day, she went to the employment office. When she came home, Winston asked her, “Sweetheart, how did we do?”
“Get the card,” she told him. They read it together:
“In computers, nice office, 10 minutes from the house, the salary that she asked for—except they paid her $5,000 more. And that’s because … I said, ‘Lord, I need a little bit more than that.’ And He added to it.
“What about the car?” Winston asked his wife. “She said, ‘They said, ‘Go pick up a new Buick.”‘”
His wife told him the company had just moved into their area from Denmark. “God moved a company from Europe over, 10 minutes from my house, to fit within the framework of our request,” he says. “That’s how good God is, in Jesus’ name.”
Through his far-reaching ministry, Winston has seen thousands of people’s lives change when they understand their true worth in Christ and walk in everything He has for them. “One of the things about being a king is that you can help other people who can’t see the king that is in them,” he says.
