Fear predominates in our world today, perhaps more so than in any other era in recent history. And Messianic Rabbi Curt Landry knows about fear. As an infant, he was abandoned on Skid Row in Los Angeles, California.
“The spirit of fear that attacked me as being an abandoned infant child in one of the most dangerous parts of one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S.—that principality, that baby killer spirit that’s in that city came after me,” he tells Dr. Steve Greene on a recent episode of the Greenelines podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network. And through that experience as well as his years of study in the Scripture, he has learned to overcome the spirit of fear.
Today, he and his wife have ministered across the globe and preached the gospel in some of the world’s most dangerous places, he says, adding, “But before we went and did that, we had to get rid of that fear.”
Landry says people tend to live in one of three mental zones: the fear zone, the learning zone or the growth zone. “If you’re in fear zone, you’re reacting, and then your choices most likely aren’t going to be the best. And your life is an accumulation of your choices.
“The learning zone is where you’re reflecting,” Landry says. “And when you’re reflecting, you need to ask yourself, ‘What am I reflecting on? Am I reflecting on God’s Word and God’s Spirit? Or am I reflecting on something else that is actually enhancing the fear?’
“The growth stone is quite simple,” he says. “It’s when after you get out of the fear zone, and you get into the learning zone, you enter into the growth zone … which is repent. The word ‘repent’ means to return, and ‘pent,’ like a penthouse in a tall building, it means to return to where we are at the top with God.”
To return to a place of being at the top with God, Landry says, we must be born again and “call on the name of Jesus, the name of Yeshua. And the Scripture says, ‘All who call on that name shall be saved.'”
But even when we’re saved and baptized, Landry says, we must each apply our repentance to our mind. “Your mind needs to understand that you don’t need to have those thoughts anymore. You don’t need to have those fears and anxieties anymore. Those fears and anxieties, most likely, were rooted and grounded in actual past-generational or current sins, because ‘the wages of sin is death.’ Death has fear attached to it.
“And so you really not only need to be confessing that your sins have been forgiven or expunged, but also that Satan, the enemy, the accuser of the brethren … the devil, can’t give you thoughts that can condemn you in your mind, that cause you to go into bondage where you’re in a fear zone or you’re afraid to go into a learning zone,” he says.
