Cancer Survivor and Amputee: ‘Have Courage and Be Kind’

It’s more than just a quote from Cinderella—it’s a life motto for Melissa Eadie, a small-town girl with big dreams. A gifted dancer and singer, Melissa was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and underwent chemotherapy at the tender age of 14, her 5-foot-8-inch frame disintegrating to 98 pounds.

With only a 1% chance of a return, cancer demanded the amputation of her leg at age 19. Now wise beyond her 28 years, she is a sought-after, Los Angeles trained makeup artist with a desire to help others process loss, work through grief and to come out the other side stronger, not forgetting that they can still dream big even if it may seem different than they thought. Quote

“Dream big because it matters to God. He will send you. We were meant to be sent. Nothing is too big for the God that we serve.”

Memorable Moment

“I realized that I had to process through the grief. We do have to go through the grief. The Bible says in Psalm 56:8 that God keeps our tears in a bottle. I believe He weeps with us. He is not ashamed of your grief. He wasn’t ashamed that just a couple of years ago, the grief hit me, and I cried a lot and had to work through it. But He wasn’t angry that I needed to do that. It didn’t mean that I trusted Him any less. God is powerful, and we have to remember that sometimes we see Him as the King of kings, but He’s also our Father. And just like my dad had to stand beside me and tell me they had amputated my leg, God does the same thing.”

Undaunted by cancer or amputation, Melissa went on to say, “I just want to encourage anyone who has a dream in mind but they feel like it’s just too big. I have dreams—I have big dreams, and the only way I’m going to get there is through my Father in heaven. Dream so big, because it matters to God. And if He’s put that passion in you, He’s going to take you wherever He wants you to go. Tell Him, ‘Send me.’ We were meant to be sent. Remember that nothing is too big for the God that we serve.”
