What’s in a Name

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. —Acts 4:12

Biblical names carry great significance and reveal their bearer’s very nature. Before completing His covenant with Abram, God (whose name is spelled YHWH in Hebrew) took the “H” from His own name and placed it in the names Abram (Abraham) and Sarai (Sarah). In Hebrew, the “H” represents God’s breath, and in so doing He breathed new life into this childless couple.

God says we are His people which are called by His name (2 Chronicles 7:14). In Christ, we have a new name. Jesus has promised, “Him that overcometh-.-.-.-I will write upon him my new name” (Revelation 3:12).

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21). Jesus means “God saves.” Because God gave His Son a name which is above every name (Philippians 2:9), we can rejoice today that we are partakers of that glorious covenant and that even the devils are subject unto us through His name! (Luke 10:17).

I confess Your name, Jesus. I rest in the security
of Your name. I rejoice in praising Your name.
I act in the power of Your name. Amen.
